In 2000 my Brass Band Mass Dynamis was performed at the Royal College of Music in Manchester, England. James Gourly, who was Head of Brass and Percussion, had me over several times for English premieres of my music.
One of the students, trumpet player Mark Allen, came to me after the concert and asked for a Brass Quintet. I had not written any yet, so I took the challenge writing one for his Zeneka Brass Quintet, a student ensemble.
I had to do this in only a few days, so I used material from my first Trombone Concert (Concterto for Trombone and Strings) composed a couple of years earlier.
This difficult to hear though, because there is no themes involved - only harmonies and interval structures.
